Understanding Preferences for Income Redistribution

چکیده
We are grateful for funding under the Robock Award in Empirical Economics from the University of Wisconsin. Wei-Yin Loh provided invaluable advice on the implementation of the tree regression methods employed in this paper. Keely thanks WARF and the Brookings Institution for generous research support, and Brookings for their hospitality. Tan thanks the generous research support provided by the Program of Fellowships for Junior Scholars, MacArthur Research Network on Social Interactions and Economic Inequality. We greatly appreciate the excellence and diligence of our research assistant, Abstract Recent research suggests that income redistribution preferences vary across identity groups. We employ a new pattern recognition technology, tree regression analysis, to uncover what these groups are. Using data from the General Social Survey, we present a new stylized fact that preferences for governmental provision of income redistribution vary systematically with race, gender, and class background. We explore the extent to which existing theories of income redistribution can explain our results, but conclude that current approaches do not fully explain the findings.

Identifying latent interest-groups: An analysis of heterogeneous preferences for income redistribution
The German government is strongly involved in redistributing income. For various reasons such as the capacity to govern and social stability this makes a good understanding of the citizens’ respective preferences and their informal coalitions extremely important. The identification of such interest groups is non-trivial as they may be determined by latent characteristics and preferences for red...
متن کاملEntitlements and fairness:: an experimental study of distributive preferences
Under three different rules for allocation of initial income we elicit experimental subjects’ preferences for income redistribution using an incentive compatible elicitation mechanism. The three income allocation rules are designed to capture preferences for distributive justice among subjects. The concern is motivated by claims in some of the experimental economics literature that non-self-int...
متن کاملSocial preferences, self-interest, and the demand for redistribution
Preferences for redistribution may be influenced by values and beliefs about distributive justice as well as by self-interest. People may prefer more redistribution to the poor if they believe that poverty is caused by circumstances beyond individual control. Therefore, beliefs about the causes of income may affect demand for redistribution. Alternatively, the effect of these beliefs on redistr...
متن کاملDe Gustibus non est Taxandum: Theory and Evidence on Preference Heterogeneity and Redistribution
Preferences over consumption and leisure play no role in the standard optimal tax model, which attributes all variation in earnings to differences in income-earning ability. We show how to incorporate these preferences, which like ability are publicly unobservable, into the standard model in a tractable way. In this more general model, the policy designer must guess at the relative importance o...
متن کاملTask-based income inequalities and redistribution preferences: A comparison of China and Japan
To clarify whether a difference exists in the redistribution preferences of Japan and China and to provide insights into the possible causes of this difference, this study conducts an experiment similar to a dictator game but in which both donors and recipients have the chance to redistribute the initial incomes. In the experiment, an initial income gap is caused by one of two kinds of tasks th...
